| I am a 'knotwork' artist, yet I am evolving the craft rather than trying to replicate certain styles or periods. I also may mix in other elements, my main focus is to enjoy myself and be original. All my art is traditional, I do not use a computer as part of the process, except in a few cases where I may touch up a smudge or two that shows up when I do the scan for uploading. Even though many pieces are symmetrical and repeat images, I do not use a computer. No, I really don't! There is an original piece of art for each of these. If you look closely you will see slight differences in the repeated images. For me there is something a little magical in the creation of such a piece. There are potentially five phases to completing a piece of knotwork. The first is to doodle out an idea. Sometimes I skip this though. The second is to create the blueprint and I almost always use graph paper and since there is a lot of erasing in getting the crossing of the knots right, I work with a pencil in one hand and an eraser in the other. The third stage is to ink the blueprint, and I sometimes skip this if it is a small piece, though the next phase is easier with an inked blueprint. Now I use my beloved lightbox. I have one with a real oak wood frame which doesn't make any difference in creating the art but I prefer this to the metal lightbox. I trace the blueprint usually onto a sheet of bristolboard paper, and I use either micron pens or hard leaded colored pencils or a combination. The last phase is to add color. I use colored pencil, occasionally I will add a little crayon. I usually use two, three or more layers of different shades throughout though occasionally one nice clear straightforward color works nicely in areas. This is the procedure I use, and other knotwork artists will do it differently. |
